I wish Tor.com or literally anyone in the funky-yet-mainstream speculative fiction space had picked this up, because that would have been a better home for it. We're past the historical moment (aka until like 2015) when all genre fiction had to be YA or face immediate oblivion. I could see this book getting traction among adult sci-fi audiences and I hope it finds those folks, but it has no relationship to YA except for the fact that the protagonists are, for no real reason, 17. This is a twisty survival drama, a harrowing story about life and death and the meaning of humanity, and it is to its detriment that it was sold as YA. I'm not going to talk too much about the plot because it's worth reading with as little upfront info as possible, but believe me when I say the romance is basically the least important aspect of this book. Based on the cover and the description, I assumed this was going to be some kind of YA finnpoe/stucky ripoff space romance.

5/22/2023 0 Comments Persuader by Lee ChildThe first Jack Reacher movie, based on the novel One Shot and starring Tom Cruise and Rosamund Pike, was released in December 2012. Killing Floor was an immediate success and launched the series which has grown in sales and impact with every new installment. Always a voracious reader, he decided to see an opportunity where others might have seen a crisis and bought six dollars' worth of paper and pencils and sat down to write a book, Killing Floor, the first in the Jack Reacher series. But he was fired in 1995 at the age of 40 as a result of corporate restructuring. He went to law school in Sheffield, England, and after part-time work in the theater he joined Granada Television in Manchester for what turned out to be an eighteen-year career as a presentation director during British TV's "golden age." During his tenure his company made Brideshead Revisited, The Jewel in the Crown, Prime Suspect, and Cracker. By coincidence he won a scholarship to the same high school that JRR Tolkien had attended. Lee Child was born October 29th, 1954 in Coventry, England, but spent his formative years in the nearby city of Birmingham. 5/22/2023 0 Comments Advice and consent allen druryOverall it's a portrait of the special glory of American Politics, unironically, which is a joke considering that the President blackmails a principled Senator to death.įOREIGN RELATIONS: This is a book about the dangers of being too soft on the Soviets, a bold and shocking position to take in 1959 (it wasn't), and the jeered strawman slogan is "I would rather crawl on my knees to Moscow than die under an atom bomb!" Which.I would? We all should? Nuclear war isn't just killing people. The others don't see real consequences of their actions-well, they do, and feel bad about it, which absolves them. Overall, though, politically it's detestable, and even if I agreed with it, its lionization of Senators Doing American Things with honor and dignity is incredibly stupid, especially considering the outcome-reasonable people disagree, but one senator, a shouting, unhinged lunatic, is without nuance and exists to be castigated by absolutely everyone, as does the mustache-twirling villain (?) of the piece. There are good parts of this book-it won a Pulitzer (overturning the committee, as it would 13 years later to deny Gravity's Rainbow, so, grain of salt), and some of the descriptions of pain and fatigue of the politickLing life are very evocative and telling. It is also one of the three Redwall novels to be made into a television series, alongside the self-titled novel (Season 1) and ' Mattimeo ' (Season 2). It is the sixth book in the Redwall series. “These perennially popular stories have been etched onto the hearts of millions of readers, and we are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring those beloved characters on screen for families worldwide to enjoy. Previously, Canadian animation studio Nelvana produced a Redwall animated show that aired from 1999 to 2002, covering the events of the first three books over the course of three seasons. 6bie3CwpqIĪs Variety notes, this is the first time the film rights to all 22 books have been held by the same production company and the first time any of the books have been adapted into feature-length films. It was released on a two-disc DVD set that contains all 13 episodes, and rated PG. Big news! The creator of Over The Garden Wall is working on a Redwall adaptation for Netflix! I'm already preparing myself for the feast scenes. Norwegian Wood was hugely popular with Japanese youth and made Murakami something of a superstar in his native country (apparently much to his dismay at the time). The story was subsequently included in the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly". While it serves as the backdrop against which the events of the novel unfold, Murakami (through the eyes of Watanabe and Midori) portrays the student movement as largely weak-willed and hypocritical. This novel is set in late 1960s Tokyo during a period when Japanese students, like those of many other nations, were protesting against the established order. Through Watanabe's reminiscences, readers see him develop relationships with two very different women-the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko, and the outgoing, lively Midori. It is told from the first-person perspective of Toru Watanabe, who looks back on his days as a college student living in Tokyo. The novel is a nostalgic story of loss and burgeoning sexuality. Norwegian Wood ( ノルウェイの森, Noruwei no Mori ) is a 1987 novel by Japanese author Haruki Murakami. 5/22/2023 0 Comments We are all completely fineShe is the co-founder of the Otherwise Award and the current president of the Clarion Foundation (also known as Clarion San Diego). I did like the imagery a bit more in Caraval, but I enjoyed the more plot-heavy nature of Legendary. I still loved the over the top nature of the world and the characters, it’s fun to be in a reality that is heightened this much. I think Legendary had similar pros and cons for me that Caraval did. Book two has a Caraval that promises the game to be real this time. Legendary is the sequel to Caraval ( here is a link to my super short review of it), a novel about a traveling magic show/game/mystery whose winner is granted one coveted prize. It also recounts cultural and personal moments - the killing of Emmett Till being one - that led a teen in Louisville, KY, to question white supremacy. “Blood Brothers” recounts the now-familiar events that led Malcolm Little to the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X lit fires with a rhetoric and a spiritual vision that had roots in Marcus Garvey’s Pan Africanism and flourished in Elijah Muhammad’s Nation of Islam. Although Malcolm X was 16 years older, there were similarities. The duo envisioned by “One Night in Miami” were nearing the end of their deep bond when they celebrated Cassius Clay’s victory over Sonny Liston in the 1964 heavyweight title bout. The result is thought-provoking, resonant, often touching. Clarke used Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith’s “Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X” as a touchstone for this documentary - available on Netflix - but also brought his own insights as a Black man in America to the work. It stings, too, with its exploration of two iconic, uncompromising figures who were friends for (the film persuasively argues) too short a spell. “ Blood Brothers” floats on perceptive interviews, rich archival photos and pointed newsreel footage. |
